Valencia

The city and province of Valencia dominate the winemaking and business life of the entire autonomía- understandably so, since most of the wine for export passes through the port and railway of the city.

Geographically, Valencia’s vineyards are divided into three sub-zones. Valentino and Alto Turia lie east and northeast of the city itself, over towards the east coast, while Clariano is separated entirely from the other two, situated south of the city. Valentino covers a wide range of terrain from the coastal plain up to an altitude of 550 metres, with the main vineyards positioned at about 180 and 260 metres. At the lower levels, the soil is dry and sandy with some alluvial deposits over limestone. There are similar but lighter soils on higher ground. Alto Turia is higher still. At an average of 620 metres, it is as hot and high as the lower slopes of Utiel-Requena, but without such extreme temperature ranges since it is that much closer to the coast. Clariano is lower-around 350 metres- with more clay in its sub-soil. In general, the soils of the region are well-adapted to vine-growing.

The main grape for white wines is Merseguera (covering about quarter of the vineyard). Here, yields light, fresh wines which can be pleasantly herby when well-made and rather neutral when over-controlled. Others are grown like Malvasía Riojana, Pedro Ximénez or Moscatel among others. The main grape for red wines is Monastrell. Others include Garnacha Tintorera and Tempranillo which is recommended for replanting  to replace any other red vine.

The Valencianos are proud of the fact that customers can go to one of the new state-of-the-art wineries on the outskirts of the city and specify virtually any wine they like, defining it by colour, strength, acidity and sugar levels, label, bottle, price and everything else. What this tends to mean is that a large output of pleasant jóvenes is produced as well as aged wines from Monastrell, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also some speciality wines from Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez.
