Penedès & Cava

The shift in Penedès’ fortunes as a wine region can be traced back to 1960, when Barcelona began to prosper. At that time, the city’s mayor, irritated by inferior local examples, promised financial help to any winemaker who turned his or her production over to red wines. The nearest large scale wine region was Penedès, but frankly, it was not promising red wine country. Its climate, soils, and seafood tradition all suggested white and rosé wines. Still many of the best Cava vineyards were located there, which meant that high-quality vineyard practice was already being used; replanting with Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo was but the work of a few years. By the early 1970s, it looked as if Penedès could produce more or less anything it wanted. Its secret? Microclimates.

There are three levels of land between the Penedès coast and the great central Meseta of Spain, starting with the low Penedès (baix-Penedès in Catalan) which ranges from sea level to 250 metres in altitude. Heres, vines yield Garnacha and Cariñena for red wines and the big three Catalan varieties (Xarel.lo, Parellada & Macabeo) for still whites. Next in the middle Penedès (mitja-Penedès), at between 250 and 500 metres. Most of the three Cava grapes are grown at this generally cooler level but also Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Highest of all is high Penedès (alt-Penedès) which reaches from 500 to 850 metres. Here are grown the most delicate grapes such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, et al. Altitudes aside, Penedès is really a mixture of bluffs and coves, hillsides and concas, all of them dominated by Montserrat mountain range.

The reputation of Penedès wine has continued to advance, although vineyard area has increased a little, while production has fallen, which probably explains the improvement in quality. Indeed the high expression wines which are the result of low yields and careful green harvesting.
