Bierzo

Bierzo was established as D.O. (“Denominación de Origen“) in 1989. It is located in the Northwest of the Iberian peninsula, in the border within Castilla y León and Galicia autonomous regions. It is a relatively small D.O. with 4,000 hectares planted. However, Bierzo has exploded in popularity and wine experts recognition in the last 10 years. Part of the blame falls on Mencía, an indigenous grape of this region that if vinified and elaborated correctly can provide fruity wines with good acidity levels (i.e. fresh wines). Climate in the Bierzo region is Continental with Atlantic influence (thanks to its relative proximity to Galicia and the ocean) which gives substantial rainfall (721 mm. average per year) with lot of sunshine in Spring and Summer.

There are 2 sub-regions in Bierzo: Bajo Bierzo, which is the area close to the River Sil valley (same river that goes through the Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras regions) with alluvial soils and higher yielding vines, and Alto Bierzo which can be quite “Alto” (High) with altitudes of 500 to 900 m. and predominantly clay soils (though some slate vineyards can be find at high altitudes too).

Bierzo has become popular also recently because it is part of the “Camino de Santiago“, a pilgrim route that thousands of people realize every year walking, cycling or by other means. If you decide to embark in this nice trip, do not miss to visit Villafranca del Bierzo, a truly iconic village in the heart of the wine region of Bierzo!
