Verdejo

“A high quality Spanish white varietal that is quickly growing in Spain and overseas to even become the Top white varietal in popularity ”.

Verdejo is named after”Verde” (which means green in Spanish) since its berries have a greenish colour, a colour tone that is translated to most of its wines. It is original from the Rueda region, in Central North Spain, where still today is where it is mostly planted (despite it is also planted further south, in Castilla La Mancha). Verdejo is today the fifth most planted white varietal in Spain but, as said before, growing in popularity and area planted year after year .

Why we like Verdejo?

It is a high quality native Spanish grape, capable of producing very aromatic and fruity wines, that can be enjoyed young or aged. Verdejo is a versatile grape, showing lively easy drinking profiles in young wines produced in volume (there are some big producers in Rueda of volume wines) to more complex, seductive white wines that display not only fruity characters (think melon and peach, even some tropical fruits too) but nutty and toasty flavours, specially when fermented and/or aged in oak. Actually, Verdejo carries oak very well and there are nice examples of 2 to 3 year old Verdejos which display a very nutty character.

Youd love Verdejo if you like…

…wines that are aromatic, with citric fruits (lemon, lime) as well as delicate herbal notes of fennel and fresh grass in the nose. White wines that are medium to full body in the palate, with fresh acidity and delicate finish / smooth, and/or…

drinking wine in social gatherings and without food, and like to do so with wines that are not too alcoholic, and/or…

if you are a fan of Sauvignon Blanc.

Unfortunately, there are some producers who like to ferment Verdejo with non natural yeasts and indulge tropical fruit and floral aromas, which are not necessarily the most characteristic of the varietal, but commercially appealing. At de Vinos we prefer wines that express the true characteristics of the grape varietal and its soil and climate (the “terroir“) characteristics and we bring different Verdejos (see below) that share these.
