Albillo de Vinos The Spanish Wine Specialist in London & the UK

“Indigenous Spanish white varietal that produce aromatic, complex white wines when it is carefully elaborated.”

There is a confusion sometimes in Spain with the name Albillo, since it is used to designate two different grape varieties: Albillo Real and Albillo Mayor. Different studies, including those included in Wine Grapes from Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Jose Vouillamoz, demonstrate that these are actually two different varieties, with different DNA profiles. We here refer to Albillo Mayor, the type of Albillo mostly cultivated in the Ribera del Duero D.O..

Why we like Albillo?

We like Albillo because it is capable of producing serious characterful white wines, with medium-to-full body, rich in aromas and complex in the mouth, specially when aged over their lees and/or in oak. We also like the fact that this varietal has been planted in Spain for many centuries (first reported mention to this varietal comes from the XVI century), so there are some old vines that can produce rich, fruit concentrated wines.

Youd love Albillo if you like…

… deep, intense white wines. White wines which are medium to full body, with mature fruit, toasty flavours (Albillo could be aged nicely in oak) and creamy texture, specially when aged on its lees. It is also a native Spanish varietal, from the Castilla y León region.

Also if you like aged white wines from Burgundy (think Chablis).
