Albariño

Probably the Spanish most well-known white grape variety in the world“.

Albariño is refreshing, is fruity and some examples can marry the oak perfectly. This grape is indigenous from the far north western part of the Iberic peninsula. It is mainly planted in the Rías Baixas D.O. in Spain, and in the Portuguese wine region of Vinho Verde, where is called Alvarinho.

Spanish Albariño gives wines that offer attractive citric notes that are mingled with a lively acidity and an unique salty edge. This characteristics comes from, in a great part, the influence of the maritime Galician climate. Vineyards are planted very close to the Atlantic ocean and surrounded by constant humidity. To achieve an optimum ripeness in this particular climate the vines were traditionally planted in pergolas at a certain height above ground, although the most modern vineyards are yield-controlled and therefore trained on wires. Albariño accounts for about 90% of all plantings in Rias Baixas, it is mainly bottled as a sole varietal and occasionally blended with other local varieties including Loureiro, Treixadura and Caiño among others. Albariño is also grown in California, Oregon, Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay.

Why we like Albariño?

We love Albariño because of its absolute combination of delicacy, fruit concentration on the palate and the characteristic appealing zesty/tangy acidity. The wines made from this variety displays fine notes of limes, grapefruit, pears, nectarines, bergamot, dried orange peel, linden, apple blossom  and lemongrass that remind us to some of the most harmonious samples made from the Riesling variety in Germany. Properly ripen, and vinified in contact with its thick skins, this variety produces wines that show an exquisite perfume, together with an attractive fleshy texture, yet formidably balanced. Some samples are fermented and aged in oak, which  adds complexity and richness, as well as pleasant notes of vanilla, almonds and marzipan.

We love it too because it is a perfect partner of shellfish and seafood, typical produce from its native Galician region.

You’d love Albariño if you like…

… elegant and harmonious wines that show the Gewürztraminer’s well-focused concentration of fruit, the refined mouthcoating texture that Viognier offers, and the seductive, clean and crisp finish of the best Rieslings.
